Out Friday and skunked for the first time in a couple of years, maybe longer.  Even the area that we all know gets warm was 10+ degrees warmer than the rest of the river but it held absolutely no fish.  I hope the dolphins didn't eat all the schoolies!

And to those who have a problem with reports, F you.  No spot burning here!

I may try again Wednesday.

They turn the water on after all the fish are gone from people posting pictures showing exactly where they caught fish.

Another tough day out there yesterday.  I was lucky to stick one fish (about 30").  I saw a couple of boats out there and they seemed to struggle as well (about 1 to 3 fish per angler).  It's still too early for the migratory fish and the local population seems to be WAY down in numbers.  Where there used to be hundreds of schoolies this time of year, we have seen literally only a handfull.  Whatever the cause, the river's resident striper population is a fraction of what it was only a few years ago.

Joe, I'm surprised you haven't seen them before now. I've spotted them for years in Moonachie swamp/creek area.  Maybe they don't venture out into the river that often.

Has there been a low tide?  I just assumed that with all the rain we would be high for a week or so.  I'm not likely to get out again till the end of next week so if any of you guys get out, a report (a vague one) wouldn't suck.

BTW, I would think the migratory fish should be moving in with the moon cycle.  With the river as warm as it's been it should be happening by now.

I got out today between 1 and 3:30. Nothing real big for me either. 1 bass 2 hacky perch. It was high tide to the beginning of the outgoing. Not the perfect time. But I go when I can. It seamed like everybody was having motor trouble of some type.

Perfect day to be on the water though.

Got out for a nice afternoon trip today.  Two of us ran all the way out to Liberty Harbor and struggled to find fish.  We worked our way back upstream for a while till we finally hit some pay dirt.  We found a flat holding schoolies and landed a bunch in about an hour.  I had 15 in the boat and my buddy had a handfull too.  I also lost a few.  It was nice to see some schoolies out there, generally about 2 pounds each, a few bigger ones.  Still, we only found them in one place and the water was like chocolate milk almost everywhere.  If we can get another week without too much rain, maybe the bite will turn on.  We didn't have many marks either BTW, and the water is still around 49 to 51*.

Out there today, surface temps were between 58 and 62 depending on the time and location.  We were lucky to find a couple of schoolies, another really tough bite.  To make matters worse, my trolling motor died.  We took it apart, the brushes inside the motor were completely worn out.  We had to work drifts all day and we had wind against tide and all that.  We did see some good marks in one place but we couldn't get them to bite.  We had some taps in another place but again no bites.  Working a flat with wood we got a couple of lucky hits and 2 small schoolies for the day.  Practically a skunk though.  This is pretty bad for April.  Time to start working out front I think.

I heard of one guy I know having a good outing once this year, but for the most part, the fishing has been super weak for this time of the season.  For the record Sonny, the bay has produced almost nothing for me since January.  I'm thinking about starting to work Raritan bay or around the hook looking for fish.  I'll feel better about fishing further south after the NY season opens since I would likely have to pass through NY waters to get to and from those areas, that's on the 15th.

Finally got out today, but it was nothing to talk about. I got a big smelly skunking. I did see a couple of guys fishing the tubes from shore, but I didnt see anyone land a fish. There are some small pods of bait around in the back waters but they dont appear to be under any pressure.

Out today for a short day.  2 of us had about 20 schoolies from a few spots.  Nothing impressive and we were lucky to find a spot holding about 15 bites.  Plus we popped a few loners here and there.  Nothing to brag about.  I hear they're getting nice big fish down in Raritan Bay on clams right now though!

Way to get a few,  got out only the one day in March.

I heard from a reliable source that some guys were nailing stripers to 30" on topwater plugs and bucktails in the Passaic River just south of the Dundee Dam. I lived in Clifton for 25 years and right on the river in Lyndhurst for 6 yrs. I caught a lot of short stripers and a few keepers. Probably 30 rats for every keeper. But I was only able to catch them on bloodworms. Anybody ever have any sucess on the Passaic with artificials?

The only public launch I can remember is the concrete one on the west side of the river by the Lyndhurst bridge. I wonder if that is still open or there is another one farther north up the river towards Garfield.

The Nutley ramp is open basically it's usable 2 hpurs before high tide and 2 hours after high tide. But it's real easy to use during those times. There also is a ramp in Kearney that's for the most part the same deal. But you might be able to get somthing small out at low tide.

Joe I live in garfield and it is true the stripers are up as far as the falls but there are certain holes that the fish hold up in,  the rest is all very low water, the clifton side is for the most part better than the garfield side but I wouldn't walk away with out trying it also. and live bait large pike also roam the area I think they all get washed over the falls joanne caught a 36" last year and her picture was in our calender with it. above the falls its loaded with smallmouth bass on certain days there are boats all over the place, one day with the fire department I was placing bottles with weights for a swift water drill and to find out a fisherman was taking them back out I caught him and he said it looked as if I was marking his fishing spots figure that one out. I must admit the Passaic River also is making a come back.

Fished Raritan Bay this past week and thanks to a buddy's accurate report form Tuesday, we killed em.  I don't just mean killed em I mean we had 40+ fish between 2 of us and 30 of them were over 30".  None were smaller than around 20".  Maybe 3 or 4 came on the troll and once we were near them we only had to swim shad bodies around to get bites.  I'm not going to say where, but I'll say it was inside the hook.  Best fishing day of my life.  Some fish approached 40".

That was Wednesday.  A friend of mine didn't do as well there yesterday, he only found blues out front.  There's a wave of them on the move inshore it seems.  I would try again this weekend Hunter.

I don't know of any boats for sale in particular, but if you want to fish the river, a bow mounted trolling motor is essential.  Youy simply cannot fish the river without one.  I would look for an old bass boat style, as opposed to a rowboat style.  Having casting decks to fish from is huge.

i was about to go to sleep last nite and let the dog out to piss when i realized how nice it was out. i checked the tides and it was bottom of out, i couldnt resist. tide was moving and water was flat. i had a yozuri mag darter i havent had the right conditions for and it was time to try it out. i think it was the 3rd cast that got me the 1st of the season. 24"

lost a keeper on the rocks 2 nites ago. blew up on that yozuri mag darter while i wasnt reeling, just drifting with the current. got him up on the banks but he shook off the hook and flapped his way back to the water. nice clean lookin fish too. need the temps to go up a few notches so they get more aggressive.

Guys....just a heads up!   The river is being dredged down by the 1 & 9 bridge. That tends to kick up the heavy metals buried in the mud. Those of you that eat an occasional river bass should probably refrain from doing so for a while.

3 years ago I launched out of laurel hill ran down to RB, ended up going around the hook the the shrewsbury rocks, caught some blues and stripers. On the way back we caught short stripers and cocktail blues in north newark bay. It was pretty early in Sept. I thnk right after labor day ? Did not expect fish in the river, because it was hot and the water temp was high.
